My Fashion Tidbits

Lets look at some fashion related news stories that I have stumbled upon…

Shanghai will host the World Expo next year, and city officials are preparing for the influx of foreigners with a campaign to ban citizens from wearing their pajamas out in the streets. An article in the Chengdu Business Daily expresses outrage over the campaign as a civil rights abuse. Snip:

Many Shanghai residents are used to loitering around the streets in their pajamas. But now the municipal government is making every effort to stop them from doing so, because it would be a “loss of face” for city authorities if a foreigner sees people walking the streets in pajamas during the 2010 World Expo. (…)

As a modern international metropolis, Shanghai has been playing host to foreigners for decades. So why have pajamas become embarrassing only now? And will it be okay for people to walk the streets in pajamas after the World Expo? Why should we change our habits and customs to suit foreigners' taste when we travel abroad as well as when we play host to them? Do we suffer from a sense of inferiority?

What's wrong with a person in pajamas? [via Rebecca MacKinnon]

A quick Google of “shanghai” + “pajamas” reveals many articles in Western media over the past decade about Shanghai's pajama-wearing citizenry, and their government's fruitless attempts to mandate their fashion choices. Apparently, walking around in the street in your jammies is a familiar part of local culture in old neighborhoods there, in part because the realms of public and private space are so blurred in daily life.

Saving Cash While Clothes Shopping

The advent of the credit card age has resulted in more convenient shopping choices and easier access to more consumer products. This means, of course, more temptations to make good use of plastic power to buy new clothes and keep up with fashion trends. Even better, why not be the trendsetter? While clothing is a basic necessity, it constitutes a large percentage of all expenses. The ever changing fashion landscape demands regular shopping sprees for the best clothes around. Unfortunately, this often leads to mounting credit card debts and a substantial loss of hard-earned income.

As with all things, however, there are ways to minimize overspending on clothes and maximize purchasing power. The keyword is foresight. Shoppers who plan ahead and know what they need to buy and when can better prepare for shopping sessions. They can also set aside money that may have worked hard for, just for a particular shopping spree. Preparing a budget is crucial to maximize any shopping money. Of course, the first priority should always be the basic necessities, such as food and shelter. Non-essential clothing like fashion products must be given lower priority. Clothes for specific seasons are often great buys. To get great bargains, consumers can buy winter clothing just after winter ends and spring begins. Most stores often re-price remaining winter clothes to get rid of them. This means huge discounts and slashed prices, which translate to substantial savings.

Controlling the impulse to buy new clothes is also important to have any chance of saving money. The urge to splurge on clothes is often strengthened by the availability of credit cards. Bonuses and promotions can also trigger an urge to spend money. While the occasional shopping therapy can do wonders for highly stressed and hardworking professionals, controlling expenses is crucial. Before even considering a certain piece of clothing, consumers must first resist the temptation and ask themselves, “Do I really need this?” Clearing the mind of images of fantasy will help buyers reconsider their decisions.

Shoppers should also keep in mind that they might not be able to use their newly bought clothes a few weeks or months into the future. Worse, buyers may be rushing to purchase clothes that don't even fit them, with self-promises of losing weight or buffing up. These “What ifs” will have a significant impact on how useful clothes will be. Studies have also shown that most people, on average, wear only one-fourth of their wardrobe on a regular basis. This means that most of the clothes bought will remain in closets. From a budget-oriented perspective, this presents a huge waste of money and savings. Identifying the specific need for new clothes is important, since the best way to save is to not buy in the first place!

B&B TV: "When OMAC Attacks!"

Finally, the world's wildest animated television show is back with all-new episodes. Are you ready for the review that's coming!? "When OMAC Attacks!" Written by: Stan Berkowitz As we all know, I'm quite the fan of Jack Kirby's OMAC series , and had been salivating in the usual Pavlovian manner for some time now in anticipation of this episode. Could it live up to my expectations? Well, no, not really. Our opener this time around slips us a bit of the Ditko before the episode

A Trip to Virginia Tech

Since I was announcing the Boston College-Virginia Tech game for the student radio station, I had the privilege of traveling to Virginia Tech with the BC team and going through most the pregame routine. Unfortunately, I also was burdened with the task of announcing the worst performance of a Boston College athletics team by far in my three year stay. Let me summarize this into sections for my 36 hour odyssey into the deep South: Friday, 1:00-4:00 : Everyone meets outside Alumni Field Gate E i

Fergie: In the Mile High Club?

Fergie, and the other equally important members of the Black Eyed Peas jumped off the V Australia Mile High Club last Friday, looking fab. Well.. maybe not completely fab but, ok nevermind. From what I can gather, this event was for a charity. So for what she lacks, I can give her kudos for that. Let me bring your attention to the shoes. (because we know I love the shoe department) They are the Giuseppe Zanotti’s for Balmain Suede Zipper boots that’ll set you back almost $2,000. I
